Meet Unsinkable Sam
The Cat with nine lives and then some!
War is rawhide. Bombs drop, ships sink, and brave souls are lost. But one furry fellow laughed in the face of danger and proved impossible to kill — a cat called Unsinkable Sam.
This astonishing feline first prowled the decks of the German battleship Bismarck, mouser of mice and booster of morale. When British torpedoes struck and sent the Bismarck down in ’41, Sam’s prospects looked grim. But while over 2,000 sailors perished, Sam floated on wreckage for days until the HMS Cossack fished him out.
You’d think he’d used up his nine lives. But for Sam, the adventure was just beginning. He earned his keep as the Cossack’s mascot, charming her majesty’s sailors. Little did he know, this ship would also meet a watery grave. A Nazi U-boat attacked, and the Cossack sank beneath the waves. Sam found himself adrift once more.
After five long days, the near-drowned feline was pulled from the sea by the HMS Ark Royal. Surely lightning couldn’t strike a third time? No one warned Sam. In that same cursed year, the Ark Royal was also torpedoed. As she exploded into the abyss, the crew thought their lucky cat’s luck had finally run out.
But miracles still followed Sam. After the Ark’s sinking, he amazingly turned up days later, clinging to flotsam in the chilly water. The Royal Navy was astonished that any creature could endure one shipwreck, let alone three. For Sam’s supernatural survival skills, they dubbed him “Unsinkable.”
But Sam’s sailor days were done. He spent the rest of the war living the life on terra firma. But far from being spooked, Sam had enjoyed his naval adventures. This courageous kitty proved that no depth of ocean could drown his defiant spirit. May we all have the resilience of Unsinkable Sam!
