Should I Share my Food with my Cat?
Treat or Threat? A Vet-approved Guide to Help You Understand
Does your tiny tiger give you those irresistible pleading eyes every time you’re preparing dinner? As a cat parent, I know I’ve been there! Sharing food with our furry babiess might seem like a great way to bond, but not everything from our plates is safe for their tummies. Let’s dive into what human foods are purr-fectly fine for your cat to sample, and which ones could send you rushing to the emergency vet.
Safe Foods Your Cat Can Enjoy (In Moderation!)
Let’s start with the good news! Some human foods can actually be healthy treats for your feline friend. Remember though — these should never replace their regular meat-based diet, as cats are obligate carnivores who need specific nutrients that can only be found in meat.
Cooked lean meats are usually a safe bet. Plain cooked chicken, turkey, or lean beef can be a protein-packed treat that any cat goes crazy for. Just make sure it’s thoroughly cooked and isn’t seasoned, especially with garlic or onion powder. A small piece of plain, cooked fish like salmon or tuna can also be a special treat, providing those omega-3 fatty acids that keep their coat glossy and their brain healthy.
