The Whisker-Raising History of Ship’s Cats and the Legendary Herman the Cat, Chief Mouse-Killer
For centuries, cats have been a common sight on ships, serving as both pets and valuable members of the crew throughout history. Their primary duty was to control rodent populations, which could wreak havoc on a ship’s food stores and potentially spread disease.
One famous cat from maritime history is Herman the Cat. Herman was a ship’s cat aboard the German merchant ship, the S.S. Bremen, during the early 20th century. He was known as an expert mouser and was said to have caught as many as 100 mice in a single voyage. Herman’s reputation as a skilled hunter spread quickly and he was soon famous among sailors and ship owners. In recognition of his service, Herman was awarded the title of “Chief Mouse-Killer” by the ship’s crew and was even given his own small cot on board.
In addition to their practical use, cats have also been cherished companions for sailors on long voyages. They provided a sense of home and comfort, and their presence on board was thought to bring good luck. Many ships even had their own resident cat, who was often given a special name and treated with great care and affection.
Despite their importance, the lives of ship’s cats were not always easy. They were often exposed to harsh conditions, such as storms and high seas, and had to contend with the stresses of life at sea. Nevertheless, cats have been a permanent fixture on ships since their inception, and their contributions to maritime history should not be overlooked.
Herman the Cat is just one example of the many felines that have served aboard ships throughout history, and his legacy as an expert mouser continues to be celebrated among sailors and ship enthusiasts to this day.
