What’s Behind Those Crazy Cat Dashes?
Every cat owner has seen it: their cat suddenly goes bonkers, tearing around the house like it’s possessed! We call it “the zoomies,” and while amusing, it can leave us wondering what’s going on. The sources provide some insight into this quirky feline behaviour.
“The zoomies are ultimately an expression of a cat’s innate predatory behaviours,” says Dr. Felicia Nutter, a veterinary behaviorist quoted in one source1. Cats naturally cycle between periods of rest and intense activity1. Dr. Liz Bales, another animal behaviorist, adds that “Kittens and juvenile cats have an abundance of energy and curiosity” that needs an outlet2. The zoomies let them act out their natural instincts in a healthy way2.
Here are some things that can trigger the zoomies:
- Built-up energy: Cats are great at saving energy, napping for a good chunk of the day1. But all that rest leads to a build-up that needs to be released — hence, the zoomies!
- Hunting instinct: Even a tiny noise or movement can set off a cat’s predatory instincts, making them chase imaginary prey around the house3. A rustling bag or a scurrying pet can be enough3.
- Post-litter box relief: Some cats get the zoomies after using the litter box. It might be a way to shake off nervous energy or celebrate a successful potty break4.
